Project Overview

Fire information request is a service for residents, insurers and other businesses to request reports from a fire incident. This service used to be email or paper submission, bringing this service online helps people access this information with more ease and also decreases the work needed for staff internally.

I designed this web application to bring fire report requests online for Surrey residents, insurers and other businesses. I used Sketch and Invision.

User Stories

This was the first project where we introduced user stories to the team. For this I worked with the business analyst to come up with stories to better understand and relate the problems we're solving to the appropriate user. We'd later try to engage the whole team in user story writing.

Working with Business

We worked directly with the fire department to discuss requirements and gather information on how to design the user flow. During these sessions we made sure to capture the nuanced business rules so the end product would meet their requirements.

File Upload

The file upload design needed a progress bar. The previous design was meant for photo uploads so I created this design to show upload progress as well as the name of the file.

Calendar

I created a calendar with month, year and date selector. The previous design only had month and day selector, this project needed more functionality so this calendar was created.

Time Picker

A new drop down time picker for users to select the time quickly.

Reflections

This project was the first full product I worked on at the City, creating new approaches (user stories), working more closely with business (this was more separate in the past), and redesigning key interface and interactions was an important step forward in building the basis for the design system. Each project is an iteration of the last and is slowly being integrated into the design system.
